yum-utils-plugins and yum-utils

All, In an effort to better distribute files for our users, we have been working with some of the yum-utils-plugins from the yum website. Specifically, we have done some work with protectbase and fastestmirror. Here is the wiki concerning yum plugins: http://wiki.linux.duke.edu/YumPlugins We are currently testing these plugins, and they seem to work well. After a couple weeks of testing, we will move these into the main CentOS tree. Attached is the readme file for the new yum-utils-plugins RPM. If you want to test these plugins, they are currently in the dev.centos.org testing repo ... do this to test: 1. Download the file repo file and put it in /etc/yum.repos.d/ http://dev.centos.org/centos/4/CentOS-Testing.repo 2. Install yum-utils and yum-utils-plugins with this command: yum --enable=c4-testing install yum-utils yum-utils-plugins 3. Enable plugins in yum by editing the file /etc/yum.conf and adding this line: plugins=1 4. To use the protectbase plugin, edit your repos in /etc/yum.repo.d/ and add the following lines to repos you wish to protect (ie, the Official CentOS repos): protect=1 and add the following to third party (or other repos) which you want to use, but do not want to update/upgrade packages that are part of the protected repos: protect=0 see the attached readme file for an example. 5. To use the fastestmirror plugin, make sure you have the plugins=1 in /etc/yum.conf (see number 4. above) and then edit your /etc/yum.repos.d/ repos and add more than 1 mirror (as baseurl= ) for some of your repos ... see the attached readme file for some examples. Currently, the verbose setting is high for fastestmirror ... you may adjust that in /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/fastestmirror.conf. We will probably make this verbose=0 on final release. 6. There are other plugins that are not enabled by default .... you can see all the plugins in /usr/share/doc/yum-utils-0.3.1/plugins To enable a plugin that is not currently enabled, copy the .py file from it's directory to /usr/lib/yum-plugins/ and it's .conf file to /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/ (and make sure that /etc/yum.conf has a plugins=1 line in it) yum-utils is also installed. I would personally prefer if this XFS code could be merged into the CentOS Plus kernel. Having it as a separate RPM is a bit messy. If anyone is interested, I've done this and it's available as a patch to the existing kernel-2.6.9-22.0.1.106.unsupported.src.rpm via: http://home.btconnect.com/james/centos4/ BTW: what is the significance of '106' in the unsupported kernel name? kernel-sourcecode RPM?

I notice that CentOS 4.2 has no kernel-sourcecode RPM, unlike 4.0 and 4.1. Is that intentional or an oversight? --- Charlie

New XFS code for the CentOS-4 Kernel from SGI

The new XFS file system code from SGI is now available on the CentOS-4 Developer's testing site. You can install the dev-testing repo from here: http://dev.centos.org/centos/4/ And putting the CentOS-Testing.repo file in your /etc/yum.repo.d/ directory. You can then install the new xfs module on the standard centos i686 or x86_64 kernels. You have to pick the proper kernel that you are running. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is the command that would install the XFS module and the minimum required XFS tools: yum install dmapi xfsprogs xfsdump kernel-module-xfs-`uname -r`-0.1-1 -------------------------------------------------------------------- This will install the just released XFS code from SGI. BUT ... this code is still not 100% working with 4K stacks (which all EL 4 and FC 3/4/5 kernels currently use). A note from SGI on this code: ################################################################# # # # NOTICE # # This xfs module rpm has been provided for testing purposes # # only. It is believed to be functional, but it has not been # # heavily tested. I installed this and ran 15 full tests with Bonnie++ on the XFS partition without any errors. I was using a PATA drive and a pIII 800 Mhz PC. ------------------------------------------------------ NOTE: This will not run currently with the CentOS Plus kernel, as XFS is already compiled as a module on that kernel. After some testing here (if all goes well), a new CentOS Plus kernel w/out XFS will be compiled and this code will also be moved (with instructions) to the CentOSPLus repo. ------------------------------------------------------- NOTE: After completing the install of the XFS code, you should edit /etc/yum.repos.d/CentOS-Testing.repo and set the line: enabled=1 TO enabled=0 to turn off the testing repository for CentOS-4 until you want to upgrade items from it again. I have tested this xfs codebase a little bit with the xfs qa tests from xfs-cmds cvs with the 2.6.9-22.ELsmp kernel on ia32. It should work on other architectures and flavors (bigmem, non-smp, etc), and it may work with other RHEL4 kernel versions, but no guarantees on that. -Eric

A patched kdepim package(for CentOS 4.2) for CJK user

Hi, all I have build a patched kdepim package for CJK user. More specifically, Knode is patched to support locale-dependent groupname encoding. CJK means Chinese, Japanese and Korean. They all need multi-byte charset(MBCS). A RFC requires that all newsgroup groupnames are encoded in UTF-8. Most newsreaders under UNIX are designed this way. But due to Microsoft products' feature(or call it bug), locale-dependent groupname encoding is the de facto standard in some CJK area. This package changes knode's behavior from UTF-8 to locale-dependent encoding, and will be helpful to CJK users. Non-CJK users probably will not need this package. And this package replaces the official kdepim package. Therefore, I think this package should go to centosplus directory. The knode patch is not written by me. I only build this kdepim package. It is from a chinese Linux distribution called Magic Linux. You can get the original patch from http://www.magiclinux.org/dev/old-1.2/cd1/SRPMS/kdepim-3.3.2-1mgc.src.rpm The original package is GPLed. So this patch is available under GPL. I, and some other users, have tested this patch, and it works. I hope this package can be merged into the CentOS repository(centosplus directory). And, I do not have a stable and secure space to store this package, I request a space(for example, a ftp account or a web space) at least 15M bytes large, so I can upload the SRPM.

3.6 Delay?

What's the status of CentOS 3.6? Red Hat released their update 6 to RHEL 3 on September 28. I updated our RHEL box a couple of weeks ago and things seem to be running acceptably well. The last thing I see in the archives is Johnny Hughes talking about mirror load from October 13 (and pointing out that the 4.2 release was well within the two-week time limit promised in the CentOS FAQ; the 3.6 update has clearly missed that deadline). I;m not expecting anything earthshaking in 3.6, but I am curious about whether the delay is due to no one remembering to flip the symlink or something more serious. If you need more testing, let me know and I can update some of my lab machines manually and listen for complaints. In any case, your work is much appreciated, especially as it's allowed me to stick with a Red-Hat--based distro and not redo all the work I'd done to handle installs. Firebird RDBS for CentOS

Hi all, i recently decide to use CentOS 4.1 and i find out that there isn't a Firebird RPM. So, i volunteer to make and maintain Firebird RPM's for the CentOS. Currently i am working ( among others ) in IBPhoenix www.ibphoenix.com, which provides commercial support for the Firebird and Interbase RDBMS's, and i participate as an administrator on the Firebird Project www.firebirdsql.org.
