CPE Weekly Update – Week of December 13th – 17th

It’s responsible for services running in Fedora and CentOS infrastructure and preparing things for the new Fedora release (mirrors, mass branching, new namespaces etc.). The ARC (which is a subset of the team) investigates possible initiatives that CPE might take on. Update ------ ### Fedora Infra * Log4j CVE affects our Openshift 3, mitigated via [fix](https://access.redhat.com/solutions/6578441) * Deployed an Openshift Dedicated cluster on AWS still deciding * Lots of spam cleared off mailing lists ### CentOS Infra including CentOS CI * Various activities/preparation for CentOS Linux 8 EOL process * Proposal for SIGs to [switch to RHEL8](https://lists.centos.org/pipermail/centos-devel/2021-December/098779… * Preparing needed steps to clear content and remove it from mirrorlist * WIP for Meta group for SIGs, allowing to build+push their -release pkgs (not having to depend on CentOS Stream team for this) * Investigating [openshift template issue](https://pagure.io/centos-infra/issue/555) for newer deployed projects and jenkins * Log4j CVE impact analysis (impacting OCP 4 if Elasticsearch is used, which we are not using) * Stream MVBE infra : renewal process for internal TLS cert ## CentOS Stream Goal of this Initiative ----------------------- This initiative is working on CentOS Stream/Emerging RHEL to make this new distribution a reality. The goal of this initiative is to prepare the ecosystem for the new CentOS Stream. Updates ------- * Dealing with a slowdown in rpm signing * Continuing the development Content Resolver enhancements * Various cleanup and docs work at various places ## CentOS Duffy CI Goal of this Initiative ----------------------- Duffy is a system within CentOS CI Infra which allows tenants to provision and access bare metal resources of multiple architectures for the purposes of CI testing. We need to add the ability to checkout VMs in CentOS CI in Duffy. We have OpenNebula hypervisor available, and have started developing playbooks which can be used to create VMs using the OpenNebula API, but due to the current state of how Duffy is deployed, we are blocked with new dev work to add the VM checkout functionality. Updates ------- * Foundation for background tasks in place * Started work on authentication and the session workflow * CLI polish ## OSCI – Distrobaker monitoring Goal of this Initiative ----------------------- This initiative is to improve the Distrobaker monitoring to monitor side-tags and module builds. Distrobaker is a service which rebuilds the CentOS 9 Stream Koji builds for RHEL 9 in Brew. Updates ------- * added a barebones implementation of gathering side tag metrics ## EPEL Goal of this initiative ----------------------- Extra Packages for Enterprise Linux (or EPEL) is a Fedora Special Interest Group that creates, maintains, and manages a high quality set of additional packages for Enterprise Linux, including, but not limited to, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), CentOS and Scientific Linux (SL), Oracle Linux (OL). EPEL packages are usually based on their Fedora counterparts and will never conflict with or replace packages in the base Enterprise Linux distributions. EPEL uses much of the same infrastructure as Fedora, including buildsystem, bugzilla instance, updates manager, mirror manager and more. Missing devel packages (librest)

I use the Open Build Service on build.opensuse.org to build packages for CentOS (and other distros), including the Cawbird Twitter client. Cawbird is currently failing for CentOS 8 (Streams and non-Streams) because nothing provides `pkgconfig(rest-0.7)`. Looking on pkgs.org, I can see rest-0.8.1-2.el8.x86_64.rpm for CentOS 8 when searching "rest"[1] but only see rest-devel packages in OKey and Raven repos[2]. I'm vaguely familiar with Koji from Fedora and so I found what appears to be the CentOS Koji build server. It appears that rest-devel was last built in late November[3] and is flagged as "expired" but the main rest package was built two days ago[4] (but still flagged as "expired"!) Is this normal? Does anyone know why there would be binary/library packages but not devel packages published? I found and was briefly worried by https://gitlab.com/redhat/centos-stream/rpms/log4j/-/tree/c9s this morning, and then realized that https://gitlab.com/redhat/centos-stream/rpms/log4j/-/tree/main has "dead.package log4j package is retired for CS-626". Updates ------- * Stream 9 composes were broken over the weekend, the backlog is now clear and a compose was pushed yesterday * Gitlab authentication suffered some effects of the auth.redhat.com migration, we expect this is now resolved * Implementing Content Resolver performance optimisations ## CentOS Duffy CI Goal of this Initiative ----------------------- Duffy is a system within CentOS CI Infra which allows tenants to provision and access bare metal resources of multiple architectures for the purposes of CI testing. releasever does not contain variant as expected

Quack, (this is a post I made for centos@ on 2021-10-27 and that never made it on the list for some unknown reason; retrying here since it's still current) I'm trying to install CentOS Stream directly without switching from Linux to Stream in our automated install. The changes were straightforward but I was very surprised to get CentOS Linux instead of the expected CentOS Stream. I captured the virt-install call to check if there was any mistake and that's fine: virt-install -n taiste.osci.io --memory=2048,maxmemory=4096 --memballoon virtio --disk bus=virtio,path=/dev/vg_Spritz/taiste.osci.io --vcpus=1,maxvcpus=2 --initrd-inject=/etc/libvirt/kickstarts/taiste.osci.io/ks.cfg --autostart --noautoconsole --watchdog default --arch x86_64 -l http://mirror.rackspace.com/CentOS/8-stream/BaseOS/x86_64/os/ --network bridge=virbr0,model=virtio --graphics none -x 'net.ifnames=0 inst.ks=file:/ks.cfg ks=file:/ks.cfg console=tty0 console=ttyS0' Our kickstart (ks.cfg) contains: url --mirrorlist=http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=$releasever&arch=$basearch&repo=BaseOS and that has worked for ages. Digging deeper I found out $releasever only contains the major version without the variant (like "6Server" on RHEL for eg). DNF is using a new variable $stream that breaks compatibility with the past and AFAIK is only available through DNF (but I can't use it in the kickstart for all versions anyway). Since we're using Ansible I can work around that but I was wondering if there was any way to handle this better in a retro-compatible way. Regards. \_o<

Hello, in Fedora, I can get all Rawhide specfiles from one big tarball: https://pkgs.fedoraproject.org/repo/rpm-specs-latest.tar.xz Is there an equivalent of such tarball for CentOS Stream 9? Board nominations and timeline

Thank you to everyone who provided nominations for the upcoming board of directors term. We received 11 nominations. Seven of those candidates have accepted the nomination and will be on the ballot. Two have declined and two have been, thus far, completely unresponsive after several attempts to contact them. The nominations are now closed. The sitting directors will consider these nominees, and their acceptance statements, over the coming weeks. The vote will occur in the JANUARY Board meeting, and the new directors will serve in their first meeting in FEBRUARY. De-branding in CentOS Stream 9

Hi all, While trying to run the CentOS functional tests on CS9[*], I noticed that several fail because of branding issues. For example, p_httpd/httpd_centos_brand_server_tokens.sh expects the server string to match `Apache.*\ (CentOS)`, when in fact the server line is: Server: Apache/2.4.51 (Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9) OpenSSL/3.0.0 This got me thinking about how de-branding is supposed to work in CS9. I would guess the usual process would have to be reversed now, where Red Hat would remove the CentOS brand from CS9 packages and add the Red Hat brand for the RHEL 9.0 builds, but clearly this isn't happening yet.
