Duplicating the remote setup to a local/virtual machine and giving the upgrade a shot before tinkering with the live server won't hurt. ;)
Actually, I'm not very worried about breaking the machine. I have enough experience with Unix (since 91) and Linux (since 92) not to do it. My main worry is if it will be viable, or simply too much work.
But yes, I'll do it localy first, on my notebook. In any case, it is my most messed-up machine, and if I can update it, everything else should be easier.
