Hi there,
I think http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=6.5&arch=x86_64&repo=os should point to: http://mirror.centos.org/centos/6/os/x86_64/ instead of: http://mirror.centos.org/centos/6.5/os/x86_64/ which returns 404. I noticed the same problem for updates, extras, centosplus, contrib also. Unfortunatelly it breaks down updates on some of our servers based on custom image, that has 6.5 in /etc/yum/vars/releasever.
Well, if you override some yum variables (like releasever, which is normally gathered from distroverpkg=centos-release , as written in yum.conf), there isn't really something we can do. But it's true that mirrorlist doesn't have to answer for previous minor release either : that's usually something that is in place during several days after a release , but normally removed after (like 6.4 doesn't work anymore and mirrorlist answers "6.4 is not a valid release or hasnt been released yet")
So, in your specific case, not overriding the yum variable is the way to go if you want updates, etc ..
