What real life samples are there of hardware that need i586 support? Is it just older hardware or is there newer hardware that would benefit from i586 support? Do other restrictions apply? Memory constraints, disk
All good questions, and I'd like to hear some answers to that just as much as you do.
Equally relevant is whether 5.x is a necessity on such hardware. If I had any left I'd probably prefer to run the more lightweight 2.4 kernel in CentOS 3.x at least until the end of its supported life.
