I was able to do "yum group install mate-desktop" (from epel). Note the space between group and install. I don't know if yum is supposed to work without the space, or not.

Both should work - I've just tried on C6.

And I've just gone through the groups shown in a grouplist - some work and some don't, so there is an issue somewhere.
