It was even before Fedora the distribution existed; you of course had the fedora.us repository.....
But I distinctly remember using a mix of the above with Red Hat Linux 9, and prior, using apt-rpm (and by hand before apt-rpm existed), before Seth tackled the problem yum solved really well.
The first release of yum was used for rhl 7.1/.2/.3
Just to get things into proper perspective.
Which at least freshrpms supported.
