Installed/tested yumex-0.99.6-2.0.centos4.noarch.rpm from the above URL. Unlike the broken yumex-0.44-1.0.c4.noarch.rpm removed from the testing repo a month or so ago, this one seems functional. There are quite a few messages to stdout but nothing fatal. Tried repo configuration changes, package install/remove/update, and preference changes on package removal after install and everything seemed to work.
There are a couple of what look like minor GUI bugs to me in that check- marks on queued packages disappear when they are added, but this could be the intended behavior - I'd just prefer that they remain checked until the queue is processed. Also, it's not totally intuitive that one must click "Add to Queue" in addition to checking packages on the list. Perhaps going to the Queue should have the effect of adding the checked packages to the corresponding list.
Looks like a candidate for the testing repo to me.
Thanks for the package.
Phil

For your information, yumex-0.42-9.0.SL.noarch.rpm from Scientific Linux for 4.2 works so far.

I tested this yumex: yumex-0.44-4.0.centos4.noarch.rpm by installing Kdegames. Installation are finished nicely here.

is there any reason you dont want to try the 0.99.6-2 version now in dev.centos.org ? also please post positive comments to the bugs.centos.org tracker - it helps us much more there
please also let us know what arch and release of centos you are using

Thank you. I would like to compare this yumex-0.44-4.0.centos4.noarch.rpm with a newest 0.99.6-2 version and what would happen then.
Here I use them at an i386 arch and CentOS 4.2 release. Japanese localization is good enough for yumex-0.44-4.0, while some funshion keys are shown in English, instead of Japanese for the 0.99.6-2 version.
Thanks, in advance.
P.S. - if you would, I can upload actual screenshots of both of them.

Tim has been very busy with this :)
OK, there is now a new version of yumex available:
yumex-0.99.7-1.0.c4.noarch.rpm
it is in the testing repo:
yum --enablerepo c4-testing update yumex
The above command should get it for you if have the testing repo installed.
If you don't have the testing repo file on your PC, you can put the file CentOS-Testing.repo in /etc/yum.repos.d/
http://dev.centos.org/centos/4/CentOS-Testing.repo -----------------------------------------------------
This version fixes several items, including:
1. Groups now function properly. 2. Items in the action queue are now marked in the Install, Remove and Update windows. 3. YumEx now writes to the /var/log/yum.log when taking actions. 4. Yum Plugins work with this version.
----------------------------------------------------- If you are using any version of YumEx with CentOS, I recommend this version instead.
Thank you very much Tim.

OK, here there is another version of yumex posted today with the following bugfixes:
1. Yumex now shows up in the Alt-Tab window when switching applications 2. Older packages than are currently installed not shown in the install window, since yumex won't install an older package. 3. Fixed gui element glade translations so that non-English language is displayed on buttons.
The new file is: yumex-0.99.9-1.0.c4.noarch.rpm
it is in the testing repo:
yum --enablerepo c4-testing update yumex
The above command should get it for you if have the testing repo installed.

I just found the bug, i forgot to set the translation domain for the glade file. So some gui elements are not translated, i have fixed it in yumex 0.99.8, i will release it tomorrow.

Tim,
a couple of comments ....
re version yumex-0.99.7-1.0.c4
1. yumex no longer has an icon in alt-tab - previous installed release had one.
2. Seems strange to show older versions in 'install' window - unless you have support for reversing out later versions ...
At the moment if you select to install an older version yumex errors out with :- /nTransaction Check Error: package yum-2.4.2-1.centos4 (which is newer than yum-2.4.0-1.centos4) is already installed
Surely it would be better not to list them in the install window - or to only list them if an option is set ...
3. I see that there is an option to downoad files lists & changelogs - and it does say that this will take longer ... but with it unselected there are still 'Files' and 'Changelog' tabs - albeit empty. Would it be possible to lose them or grey them out when the option isnt selected - alternatively and preferable would be to download the information just for that package and display it when you click on the tab - either automatically or with a confirm - subject to preference setting.
4. Select repos has a bug that it changes the display order apparently randomly when you click on the lines and selection boxes ... I would also like to be able to see (and or edit) the config for the repo - and possibly add repos from within yumex.
Hope this is helpful
Regards Lance

Files & changelog is always availible for installed packages, the option is only for availible packages, where some extra metadata has to be download to show files & changelogs.

anybody else has this problem ??

I tried again - it is after clicking on the 'File' bar atthe top so it has a ^ in it - so it is trying to order the list - not sure how though and it is quite disconcerting when the one you select moves ...

One other minor point - it seems a bit clunky to have to go through the queue system to install / update one or a couple of rpms ... I can see the benefir of it - but why not have 'update selected', or 'install selected' button on the relevant sections as well as 'add to queue' ???

Hello again, and thank Tim.
As for localization problem for Japanese (maybe for other languages too) is fixed at a new version of Yum 0.99.9 that you uploaded just now. Every function keys displayed are localized normally. -Green-

I want to take the time to publicly thank Tim for his response to the CentOS project.
Since lots of people want to use yumex with CentOS (or at least a GUI front end for CentOS ... and yumex is the best we have found), and since the newer versions of yumex were not functioning with CentOS, we asked Tim if he would get us a good version that we could use.
Tim not only did a new version of yumex 0.44.x for us to look at, he also back ported his newest yumex code (0.99.x) for yum-2.5.x back to make it work with yum-2.4.x (specifically for CentOS).
Tim has agreed to work with us in making yumex work better in CentOS, even going so far as allowing us to assign him as a contact point for yumex bugs in CentOS.
We greatly appreciate Tim's extra effort for the CentOS project, and expect a version yumex to be part of the main CentOS repos sometime soon.
Thanks, Johnny Hughes
