The directory http://mirror.centos.org/centos-3/3.4/updates/x86_64/RPMS/ contains i386 packages. I am setting up a local mirror so I was wondering if these packages are required?

Hi,
yes, they are needed if you have the 32 bits compat libs installed (ie openoffice is 32 bits only). They are the updates for the ix86.rpm in the main installation tree.
