Hello,
I have few questions related to the cloud images provides for c8s and c9s, i.e.: - https://cloud.centos.org/centos/8-stream/x86_64/images/ - https://cloud.centos.org/centos/9-stream/x86_64/images/
1) I see the c9s images are regularly updated, while the c8s images not; is this wanted, or simply a mistake/miss somewhere? If so, will they be kept up-to-date just like the c9s images?
2) are the Vagrant images there officially supported? Let's say you use one, and find a bug; then check on a "classic" installation (baremetal/VM), and the bug isn't there; can users report problems in those cases?
3) would it be possible to have either unversioned or "-latest" symlinks for the latest versions of all the files (i.e. images, checksums, etc)? This way, it will be much easier for users to fetch the latest versions with no need to change URLs frequently. Of course, the assumption is that users of this are always willing to use the latest version.
Thanks!

CentOS Stream 9 is starting the full RHEL developers doing development in CentOS Stream and we are doing things first there. At some point in the near future (soon TM :D) all the processes in Stream 9 will be moved over to Stream 8. Once we change to the new process, everything should start happening at a similar interval.

We currently do that with ISO and I see no reason not to do it for Cloud Images as well. That is a question I can ask.
Thanks!

The intent is to keep these updated similarly to the CentOS Stream 9 images. I'm checking to make sure we get some refreshed images pushed.

If there's trouble in the images themselves, those can go in Bugzilla for the appropriate release: https://wiki.centos.org/ReportBugs
Choose the 'distribution' component if you think a problem is specific to the images themselves and not a particular package.

This would indeed be helpful, let's see what we can come up with.
Thanks!

I have updated the 8-stream images and I will be updating them at least Monthly in the future (initially).
I do not yet have a 'latest' symlink as we are going to need to figure out something for the CHECKSUM information.
In the short term I can do a -latest link that does not have CHECKSUM info .. if you wanted to use CHECKSUM, you would need to know the real name of the image to check it .. if everyone thinks this is required.
NOTE: the above is just for 8-stream. The process for 9-stream is still being developed and eventually what is finalized for 9-stream will be moved to 8-stream as we standardize all processes moving forward.
But for now, there is at least a process in place to get newer 8-stream images published.
Thanks, Johnny Hughes

Johnny, would you mind updating https://app.vagrantup.com/centos/boxes/stream8 as well?
Can I help with this process? It's also tracked at https://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=18028

I will look and see if I can get hooked into that process .. as well as updating the ec2 aws images process.
Thanks, Johnny Hughes

That would be greatly appreciated.
While on the same subject, is there any plan to publish a stream9 Vagrant box? I know the box files themselves are already on cloud.centos.org but publishing on Vagrant Cloud (as the other images are) would make it easier to consume.
And speaking of Vagrant Cloud: https://app.vagrantup.com/centos states "This user has not filled out their profile."
If there's a better place to send this than the mailing list, I'd gladly hear it.

Hi Johnny,
I am working on kubevirt/common-templates [1] and it would be very helpful to have stable links to guest images, which could then be automatically downloaded or presented to the user.
Will it still take some time to complete the 9-stream process?
Thanks, Felix

Latest links for 9-stream images is something that we're working on. I don't have an exact date for this, but we should see something in the next couple of weeks.

Hi Brian,
few weeks later...

is there any progress/news on this? It would be nice to have unversioned/"-latest" symlinks for cloud images.
Thanks,

Is there any progress/news on this, after more than one year since the last updates.
It would be nice to have unversioned/"-latest" symlinks for cloud images, simplifying a bit the work done by "automated users" of the images.
Thanks!

Thank you for your patience. I believe we're at a point that we should be able to do this. I'll give it a try this week and see if I can get it done in time for next weeks composes.

Hi Troy, thanks for taking a look at this.
I see that both for 8-stream and 9-stream there are "latest" versions for all the architectures and the different types of cloud images; is the implementation complete? may those "latest" names be used officially used in various projects?
Thanks,

It has been implemented, and as you can see, it has been successfully run once. I am waiting until it has successfully run twice before declaring it complete. That will happen when todays compose images get pushed out, which should happen sometime tomorrow.

We had a successful second release, I'm declaring this feature working. You should now be able to point to the "latest" images and sha-sums and always get the latest versions.
Examples: https://cloud.centos.org/centos/9-stream/x86_64/images/CentOS-Stream-Generic... https://cloud.centos.org/centos/9-stream/x86_64/images/CentOS-Stream-Generic... Those currently point to the 20230605.0 images, but next week they will point to next weeks images.
