anaconda dependency calculation?

Hi all, I'm trying to find a tool that calculates all dependencies for a specific package or group of packages for use with CentOS 5 (beta) with the intention of putting together a custom single CD build of CentOS 5. With CentOS 4 i used a python script that used the hdrlist module to find all dependencies which borrowed code from a number of sources. I've looked at yumdownloader and how it checks dependencies (using the --resolve option) but if i pass it the list of packages defined in say the Base and the Core yum groups which generally form an absolute minimal install i end up with about 200 packages. If i do a custom install (using beta 1 disks) and deselect everything i end up with over 300 packages. So i'm guessing anaconda calculates dependencies in a slightly different way, can anyone point me to files/code where i should be looking to find out? Best regards, Wojtek --------------------------------- CentOS Wiki tip proposal: Copy/verify files from CD/DVD quickly If you want to copy a lot of files from CD or DVD, or verify md5 or sha1 of a large number of files, keep in mind that CD/DVD drive seeks are expensive and if are avoided as much as possible, the task could be completed faster (and quieter). Method 1. Copy the image to hard disk and loopback mount it. a) copying image assuming device is /dev/dvd and disk is either a single-session CD or CD-RW single session recorded in DAO mode, or DVD+RW recorded with growisofs $ dd if=/dev/dvd bs=2k of=hard_disk_directory/imagename.iso It the media is a single-session CD or CD-RW recorded in TAO mode, there are unreadable sectors at end of session, you need to determine size: $ isosize -x /dev/dvd results are like this: sector count: 346739, sector size: 2048 note sector count and read image using dd: $ dd if=/dev/dvd bs=2k count=sector_count_value of=destination_image_file_path Then, become root (e.g. using su), and make mount point if needed, mount the image: # mkdir -p /mnt/loop/myimage # mount -o ro,loop destination_image_file_path /mnt/loop/myimage Now you can use files in /mnt/loop/myimage, CD/DVD media is not needed. NOTES on loopback method: - needs root for lopback mount - will work only for single session media (or first session of multi-session media) - no seeks when reading DV/DVD media, but entire media is being read, justified only if you need to read most of the files, or a number of file multiple times Method 2 Access files in physical media order You could observe, that (most of the time) inode numbers of files in ISO9660 filesystem mounted on Linux are increasing as the start sector numer of file increase (within a single session). So to minimize seek operations access files in increasing inode value order. Please use attached scripts flist_by_inum.pl - sort file list by file inode number flist_by_inum.pl - sort md5/sha1 list by file inode number Mount the CD/DVD media, let us assume the mount point is /mnt/dvd If you want to copy some or all regular files to destination_directory, run cd /mnt/dvd find . -type f -print0 | flist_by_inum.pl -0 | cpio -p0md destination_directory You can of course give find utility some files/directories instead of ., as well as any criteria. If you are sure no file name contain white-space, etc, you can remove -0 and 0: find . -type f -print | flist_by_inum.pl | cpio -pmd destination_directory If you want to verify SHA1 fo the files, do the following: cd /mnt/dvd cat sha1sum_file | mdlist_by_inum.pl | sha1sum -wc > ~/verify.rslt 2>~/verify.msg NOTES: - no root privileges needed - should work for multi-session discs (although with some seeks) - only files needed are accessed - method also useful for accessing files on loopback-mounted images located on DVD

Installing both x86_64 and i386 RPMS on a x86_64 system

I have my own internal customised installation tree for CentOS 4 that is used for installs over NFS - I've added extra RPMS to my x86_64 distro and updated comps.xml and re-generated the hdlist files. This works fine in most cases - except when I have both x86_64 and i386 versions of the same RPM - only the x86_64 package gets installed (or if there is only an i386 RPM, then this gets installed OK). I know this works fine for x86_64/i386 RPMS that are part of the default distro, so I'm obviously missing something somewhere ... Anyone know how I make sure both x86_64 and i386 RPMS get installed? Hola estoy tratando de administrar un servidor linux remoto desde mi linux local, hasta ahora me habia contentado con el acceso a la consola pero ahora necesito usar herramientas graficas .... que incluyen un navegador bien, se dice que NX es el mejor así que alla fui :-) despues de un dia de romperme la cabeza pensando como es que se usa el freenx y el nx, decidí bajar el nxclient de nomachine jejeje y me pude conectar, y es ahora donde viene mi duda-problema cuando levanto una conexion nx con el cliente remoto (mi maquina local es el server segun la conexion NX) mi interfase kde se pone practicamente inutilizable, casi es como si mi interfase kde fuera la remota y ni siquiera eso, se pone más lenta aun, imposible de usar el menu kde!!! y eso me pasa cuando levanto una session kde remota o cuando solo levanto una aplicacion, por ejemplo el firefox, konqueror o konsole. De hecho se pone más lento el ambiente cuando levando una sola aplicacion que cuando levanto el entorno remoto completo. y lo interesante es que es solo el ambiente, las aplicaciones que estan corriendo local siguen igual de bien, se navega igual de bien por mis ventanas firefox , las ventanas del konsole funcionan y responden a la velocidad normal; es solo el ambiente-entorno kde quien se pone sin responder.... alguien tiene una idea de eso? la configuracion del NX es más o menos así: freenx+nx en la parte remota nxclient en la parte local como aliviantar esto? como cosa curiosa, haciendo un rdestop-1.5 hacia un windows que está al lado del linux que trato de administrar no afecta mi linux :-), y la respuesta en velocidad es identica al nx ..... un windowsero podría hacerme pasar un mal rato ..... jejejejejejeje cu roger __________________________________________ RedHat Certified Engineer ( RHCE ) Cisco Certified Network Associate ( CCNA ) ____________________________________________________________________________________ Now that's room service! Zero day updates upstream

hi guys, Something to talk about while we prep C-5 for release... There were some packages that were updated along with release, I can imagine this was since the tree must have been frozen a while before actual release upstream. However, we dont have that problem - the tree hasent been released. So, what does everyone thing ? Should we release the tree with the updates rolled in ? or should we release the tree exactly as upstream did, and also provide the updates to go alongside - but in the updates repo ? One thing that I would be very hesitant to update would be the kernel, since updating that would imply updating the installer kernel as well. CentOS 5 Devel problems with initial setup

Just installed CentOS 5 Beta. During install I selected no ipv6 support (not sure if that anything to do with it). After install, the initial setup screen, I changed authentication to use LDAP, then I tried to go into firewall setup and it hung. I had to reboot to try again...

Malloc behavior

Hi, I'm sorry for a so big email, but this might be a bug. As some of you may know, there is a characteristic of malloc called overcommit, which lets a program "allocate" more virtual memory than is available on the system. I've set overcommit_memory=2 and turned off swap, but I believe the behaviour of malloc is not the expected. Let me introduce the overcommit, then show the test code, then the results. //-- Starting introduction of overcommit According to http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man3/malloc.3.html: "By default, Linux follows an optimistic memory allocation strategy. This means that when *malloc*() returns non-NULL there is no guarantee that the memory really is available. This is a really bad bug. In case it turns out that the system is out of memory, one or more processes will be killed by the infamous OOM killer. In case Linux is employed under circumstances where it would be less desirable to suddenly lose some randomly picked processes, and moreover the kernel version is sufficiently recent, one can switch off this overcommitting behavior using a command like # echo 2 > /proc/sys/vm/overcommit_memorySee also the kernel Documentation directory, files *vm/overcommit-accounting* and *sysctl/vm.txt*." Looking at vm/overcommit-accounting: "The Linux kernel supports the following overcommit handling modes 0 - Heuristic overcommit handling. Obvious overcommits of address space are refused. Used for a typical system. It ensures a seriously wild allocation fails while allowing overcommit to reduce swap usage. root is allowed to allocate slightly more memory in this mode. This is the default. 1 - Always overcommit. Appropriate for some scientific applications. 2 - Don't overcommit. The total address space commit for the system is not permitted to exceed swap + a configurable percentage (default is 50) of physical RAM. Depending on the percentage you use, in most situations this means a process will not be killed while accessing pages but will receive errors on memory allocation as appropriate. The overcommit policy is set via the sysctl `vm.overcommit_memory'. Shouldn't I have got something about 1000 MB instead of 178 MB, because 1000 MB is 50% of physical memory? As long as I have 1.4GB free, I should be able to allocate those 1000 MB. Are there other (configurable or not) limits for memory allocation? (ulimit is not being used) Then I repeated the same test, but with swap on. Swap size is 1GB. Conditions: Kernel: 2.6.9-42.0.10.ELsmp RAM memory: 2GB Swap: 1GB overcommit_memory=2 (changed by me) overcommit_ratio=50 (default) ' free ' yields: total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 2065252 605480 1459772 0 12628 283512 -/+ buffers/cache: 309340 1755912 Swap: 1048568 0 1048568 Then I've executde the test code and got: malloc 1198 MB - (nil) Returned null It means this time I've allocated successfuly 1198 MB. Hi All, I'm trying to rebuild the version of perl that is in CentOS 4.3 to update the version of threads::shared(3pm) that has a serious memory leak in it. When I try to build it some of the tests its running fail (failure went off my screen but I'll have that in a moment) and it failed to build. BTW, I'm building on a CentOS 4.2 system. So my questions are two fold: - Does anyone know of any known issues with building the perl SRPM in general? - Once I have the latest threads::shared in buildable SRPM is there an interest in picking that up, or is there anyone that would like to put it in a repository? firstly, we slipped on shipping beta out yesterday, but we hit a couple of issues that needed to be resolved before we could get the iso's out. Most of the things are now fixed and the final bits are building as I write this email. there is one issue that was raised by Johnny that really does need fixing, perhaps not something for beta-public, but something that does need to get fixed for Final release. <background> The way things stand right now, anaconda uses yum in c5, so the media now contains a local repository metadata but its not the standard meta data used by yum. Anaconda and pirut need a specific string added in ( the mediaid fluffage, some of the fedora guys will be familiar with ) so that they can use the media at installtime and also be able to use the same media post install to add packages. The issue is, that this now creates a problem in that you can no longer loop mount the DVD iso under a http/ftp server and just use that as a remote repository to pull packages from using yum. </background> So now the thing is - for us to facilitate this there are three options. 1. We ship 2 repodata/'s on the media and use one for anaconda and use the other for yum ( ugly fix ) 2. We change anaconda to not need that media stuff in the repodata/, and get that from somewhere else ( not gonna happen : too much work, and too much potential to change from upstream in ways not even imaginable ) 3. We fix yum to use the media fluff'd repodata/ ( potentially a few lines fix and should just work ). This will allow yum + anaconda, pirut and friends to essentially just use the same repository metadata. What does everyone else think about this ? I think from this email, my own personal preference is easy to make out. Also, is this really an issue we even need to worry about ? For me, its an issue since I use loop mounted media right off the block. Apparently Octave has been orphaned by the upstream for EL5 , although it is still in Fedora Extras. It does successfully build from FC6/7 src.rpm packages under CentOS5 beta, albeit with a few additional requirements... If they get enough positive feedback, they move to centosplus. If not, they sit there because ostensibly there is no one using/pushing for them." For every package in Centosplus, is there a responsible person in charge, which should release security updates/patches for it? Do you know how is this process inside Red Hat, and how our process compare to theirs? Thanks

If folks here want to be a part of that test they need to join the centos-qa list (http://lists.centos.org/mailman/listinfo/centos-qa) and send a message to this list (centos-devel) saying that they would like to be a part of the qa process and join the qa team, with details of relevant experience if you are not known to the core developers. Hi I would be very interested in beta testing CentOS 5 and report any issues. I currently run shared hosting servers using Fedora and want to switch to CentOS. As this bugtrack say "binaries from redhat" are not vulnerables but what happen to recompilations? https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=200219 I understand that it is the compilation process what make this bug not exploitable and not the source code so, the question is: is the httpd binary from centos exploitable? I could not find any refence in the web about this topic. maybe I should ask in the centos-user mailling list but because it is a compilation thing ..... CentOS 5 Beta/QA Application

Here at the WashU Engineering school we run CentOS in both workstation and server roles; over 75 machines and more tied behind clusters. We have a good set of architectures to test on if needed; the usual x86/x86-64 plus Alpha and PPC, in a mixed environment authenticating to LDAP/Kerberos off of Active Directory. Plus, my boss just got a new workstation, so I figured I'd show him a good time. :) Mark Bober CTS

Back-port md raid1/10 BIO_RW_SYNC patch for DRBD

Attention CentOS Developers, Here is a back-port of Lars Ellenberg's md raid1/10 patch from 2.6.19+ to 2.6.9. It seems the md raid1 and raid10 drivers were stripping the BIO_RW_SYNC flags on requests which caused a severe performance penalty for DRBD when writing it's meta-data to these volumes. The patch is attached as well as inlined: ---------- BEGIN ---------- Subject: md: pass down BIO_RW_SYNC in raid{1,10} From: Lars Ellenberg <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> md raidX make_request functions strip off the BIO_RW_SYNC flag, thus introducing additional latency. CentOS 5 Beta Initial Test Release

Hi, as requested by the qa-list moderator, I'd like to introduce myself: I'm working with LINUX since 1993 (I've still a almost complete floppy collection of the SLS distribution). I've done some patches for the DAMA AX25 part of the kernel. Actually, I support about 8 CentOS 4.4 and 1 Centos 3 servers. 2 of them act as a HA cluster (heartbeat + drbd) for samba. There are 2 brandnew servers waiting for CentOS5 for server consoldiation (cluster + xen). So I'd like to join the qa team, helping getting the most famous distribution. Hans-Joachim

I was having a conversation with z00dax on IRC, and the suggestion was made that I post about this to the mailing list: CoBlitz is a nifty free distribution service for large files over http, that utilizes PlanetLab's network of hundreds of machines to provide bittorrent (or better)-like speeds while offering many of the advantages of bittorrent (less stress on mirror sites). The website is: http://codeen.cs.princeton.edu/coblitz/ To use it: ..."You add the prefix http://coblitz.codeen.org:3125/ to the URL you want to serve, and CoBlitz does the rest"... I'm sure you could do something like use tcpwrappers to limit the machines that can get to the mirror URL to the PlanetLab network. There was a good article on CoBlitz in the August 2006 edition of ;Login: - http://www.usenix.org/publications/login/2006-08/pdfs/park.pdf - however you need to be a Usenix/Sage member to read it (t becomes free August 2007). Another idea was to use a binary diff program like bsdiff - http://www.daemonology.net/bsdiff - to distribute patches to a base beta CD (that suggestion was less popular with z00dax - "thats why god made mirrors" :-) Oh, and someone might want to update the html files at http://dev.centos.org/mirrorscripts ; they reference torrents for really old beta versions.
