hi guys, lots of people on this list are keen on contributing to the CentOS effort - and one place where we could, as a group of people, make a massive difference is being able to deliver a ksplice upgrade model. A couple of people have started in silo's to try and get something together but I feel it might be a good time to try and see if we can do somethng as a group. Do we have people on the list who find the idea of rebootless kernel upgrades interesting ? Is there some desire to try and make that happen within the CentOS Ecosystem ? - KB

anaconda dependency calculation?

Hi all, I'm trying to find a tool that calculates all dependencies for a specific package or group of packages for use with CentOS 5 (beta) with the intention of putting together a custom single CD build of CentOS 5. With CentOS 4 i used a python script that used the hdrlist module to find all dependencies which borrowed code from a number of sources. I've looked at yumdownloader and how it checks dependencies (using the --resolve option) but if i pass it the list of packages defined in say the Base and the Core yum groups which generally form an absolute minimal install i end up with about 200 packages. If i do a custom install (using beta 1 disks) and deselect everything i end up with over 300 packages. So i'm guessing anaconda calculates dependencies in a slightly different way, can anyone point me to files/code where i should be looking to find out? Hi, Earlier in the evening today Ralph, Fabian and I had a chat about the present state of the language subsites. This email sort of summarises the main issue ( s/w ). We seem to have run into a slight technical hitch with punbb/fluxbb. They dont support LDAP as a backend. And we had decided a few months back that all new rollouts must have ldap backend so we can rollin CentOS-DS / openldap based backend. So we need to look at alternatives, and since the primary focus of these international sites is going be forums : Here is a shortlist ( if there is anything else that people are aware of, please add to this list ) - phpBB - SMF - Fudforum - phorum - fluxbb Requirements: - Must be able to scale ( couple of hundred thousand msgs ) - Must be able to handle ldap auth ( if it cant, whats involved in writing the ldap-auth portion ) - Must address the specific requirements raised by the present www.centos.org forum users ( Can you please fill this section in ? ) - Must support all languages we need ( pure utf8 support would be good ) - Secure - Skin'able Nice to have: - Capable of running multiple instances from a single deployment - responsive community :D Things we will need to do: - Decide on what s/w to use. - Give the ArtWork people enough time to get the look & feel sorted. - Migrate newbb forums from www.centos.org to $system ( hey, english is a language too :D ). - Migrate fr.centos.org into the final s/w - setup {de/es/ja/it/pt_br}.centos.org Actions: Ralph and Fabian are going to work on setting up a test ldap server, once that is online we will then start by installing into our test-vm-farm the various s/w to eval them. hi guys, we need a way to build embargo'd content like reimzul's priv-build, that does not make stuff public till a specific date ( the actual push to public can be manual ); how would we achieve this on cbs ? A project calendar

Hi There is quite a lot of stuff going on and not all of it is easily visible to everyone. The way to perhaps address that is to setup a project calendar that people can sync against and look at regularly. And more win if we can have it slightly open ended, allowing people / projects / sig's to contribute events into that cal. To that extent Stephen Smoogen introduced me to Pierre-Yves Chibo who runs the fedocal effort, and they have graciously agreed to set something up for CentOS as well. Stephen I know is on this list already, I've requested Pierre to join ( he might have done so already ). Firstly looking for comments on the idea / plan - and then for options on implemention, publishing and consumption of the calendar. cloud-init in CentOS

During the cloud instance SIG meeting today we talked about future plans for cloud-init in CentOS. Right now cloud-init is included as part of EPEL and that's where most CentOS users consume it from. The problem is that cloud-init and related bits are critical for building images to run on a public or private cloud, and we need to build early guest initialization tools into the cloud images we produce. Ideally this does not include adding EPEL or packages from EPEL which have not been rebuilt in our build systems. So, the proposal that there's general consensus upon within the SIG is to maintain cloud-init, its dependencies, and any related packages on git.centos.org and rebuild them ourselves. I'm one of the maintainers in EPEL so I offered to maintain the git repos for CentOS, anyone else who would like to be involved in more than welcome to step up. Thoughts, questions, concerns? -s

I expected that yum-plugin-security would at least update bash when this command was used: yum --security update-minimal Does this work on RHEL only? Dear Johnny Hughes and others: I've spent the morning ereading thru the mailing list archives from June and July while my Centos 7 machine mock user ran a mock --init using the mock.cfg found in the 7.00.02 kernel folder. I have a server running C6 at this time that won't support 64 bit, it was built before Y2K believe it or not. I saw some reference to a git repository and the need to rebuild some packages. Hi all, During last week's meeting I agreed to bring this up (sorry for the delay). KB asked "do we care and how much, if at all, that the key used to sign the content is the real distro key?" (Because at the outset, it's going to be more difficult to use the distro key for Atomic host.) IMO, we don't so long as we have a SIG key that is publicized. I don't see any reason it has to be the main CentOS / distro key. Any objections/thoughts/comments? Request to join the Atomic SIG

I am upstream author of one of the components (rpm-ostree), and have contributed to others like systemd, and SELinux, as well as work on packaging Kubernetes in http://copr.fedoraproject.org/coprs/walters/atomic-next/. I'm particularly interested in how we maintain the atomic host ostree composes and integrating it with the CentOS infrastructure.

openafs userspace packages

Hello Everyone, I have been working on reworking the upstream spec file to work with centos. I've been keeping track of my progress on my github page [1] and I welcome pull requests if you find a problem. I have pulled out all of the code related to the building the kmod, as I think that should at least be rewritten from scratch and quite possibly should live in it's own spec file. I did turn off the transarch paths configure option, which will break external scripts that expect the legacy paths. Turning off the transarch paths also meant I had to put moved files back into subpackages and I might have misplaced some files and not noticed. Finally, I've gotten the userspace packages building in koji [2] with minimal testing. Use at your own risk; they might kick kittens. Note that these are only userspace packages. To David Mansfield, My name is Bert, I'm on the Centos-Doc mailing list and I've been doing a bit of further write up on the C6.5 -> C7 upgrade process - basically on how to avoid common problems and pitfalls. In other words, give the user the best experience possible. I've been doing a fair bit of experimenting before I go ahead and "put up a bunch of suggested ways of doing things to avoid problematic upgrades" and would like to share what I've learnt so far, and ask for some more info. Regarding issue #1: I too did an upgrade on that had an NTFS partition (was for dual-boot Windows 2008R2). I commented out the mountpoint in /etc/fstab BEFORE doing the upgrade (as removing ntfs3g would obviously cause mount to complain it didn't know about the partition, and there's no FUSE add-ons in the upgrade image kernel) and that avoided any problems for me. It is helpful to know from your experience that the upgrade process ended up in an emergency shell. This will scare some people, so I will be adding a specific note about checking for mount points (specifically that use FUSE add-ons) and a suggestion to comment them out of /etc/fstab before running the preupgrade advisor. I suggest commenting them out and unmounting before running the advisor because (from what I gather) the tool scans and any all mount points collecting a list of files, which wastes time on the NTFS partition. You wouldn't expect someone to install Linux-related libraries or executables on their NTFS partition... though you never know. One system of mine also had a md RAID6 array, which I unmounted and commented out for the same reasons above. After the upgrade, yum isntall ntfs-3g went as expected, and un-commenting the mountpoint got it mounting again. I'm glad that worked for you in the end. Perhaps there are issues with automount that you were encountering prior to the upgrade. With the new Regarding issue #2: My write-up basically guides the user through removing (read as exorcising if you'll pardon the expression) anything X Window System and Gnome related before running the upgrade advisor (at least for the last time). I include the X window system packages because there have been a few changes that I suspect would lead to a "bad experience". Some preferences seem to have been brought across after a re-install once running C7. There was a couple of tricks I did before the upgrade. 1. Change to runlevel 3 so the GUI doesn't start up straight after the upgrade. (i.e. get to a text-only shell) so we can re-install our GUI aftewards. 2. Removed X, Gnome and MESA packages. I had disabled NetworkManager and for the interfaces in the ifcfg scripts so I can't comment on NM-related issues but there were a few niggles after the upgrade. Post upgrade... yum groups mark convert to fix the group package assignment changes between C6 and C7. yum groups install "GNOME Desktop" "Graphical Administration Tools" to install GNOME again... It's no longer "yum groupinstall ....." This more/less got GNOME up and running again for me (via VNC server) Once in GNOME, use the package maanger to install anything else. /etc/inittab is no longer relevant. Use ln -sf /lib/systemd/system/graphical.target /etc/systemd/system/default.target to get X and your window manager starting up by default. Network manager: Was starting again by default. Once I got around that, and switching over to fiewall-cmd (from plain IPTABLES) and setting up an appropriate zone, my networking has been fine. May I ask, why did you choose to install MATE? Could you not get GNOME working? Can anyone else comment on NM? I tried a bunch of things - uninstalling GNOME stuff, re-installing, installing a bunch of package groups. This one had me stumped for quite a while. Solution#2 Ultimately, the solution was (I believe) that some modifications in /etc/pam.d needed to be merged from the .rpmnew files. On this system, I don't believe the pam.d configuration had been modified from defaults, so I copied the .rpmnew files over (beware: this can be dangerous) and voila! Issue#3: I installed MATE Desktop from epel, and things looked good except that NetworkManager wasn't running: Solution#3: service NetworkManager start chkconfig NetworkManager on Issue#4: Back to the NTFS volume not mounting. Solution#4: I installed ntfs-3g packages and everything mounts fine through nautilus, which is all the user needs. Now everything I could test is working, spice client, Citrix client, google-chrome, vlc, rhythmbox playing mp3s, handbrake (thanks "nux" again), VPN etc. Hope this helps, I was going to update the wiki, but there's no edit button! -- Thanks, David Mansfield Cobite, INC.

Before going into details, I want to thank the CentOS team for all the hard work over the years, and especially the top-notch effort to get C7 out, and kudos to the individuals getting the upgrade tool to work too. I feel spoiled. Back to the story: The system had significant use of 3rd party repositories. After I ran the pre-upgrade tool, I used the report of "unsigned" packages (which includes the source repo in the report, which is very useful) to remove all of these packages before update. I ran the tool again and was satisfied that the list of inplace upgrade risks was acceptable and ran the update. Issue#1: The system upgraded and rebooted to the emergency recovery shell. This was because an NTFS partition could not be mounted (ntfs-3g not installed by default during upgrade for some reason). This was somewhat a problem for the user before the upgrade, so I cannot be 100% sure that mounting this a boot was always working 100% before. I tried a bunch of things - uninstalling GNOME stuff, re-installing, installing a bunch of package groups. This one had me stumped for quite a while. Solution#2 Ultimately, the solution was (I believe) that some modifications in /etc/pam.d needed to be merged from the .rpmnew files. On this system, I don't believe the pam.d configuration had been modified from defaults, so I copied the .rpmnew files over (beware: this can be dangerous) and voila! Issue#3: I installed MATE Desktop from epel, and things looked good except that NetworkManager wasn't running: Solution#3: service NetworkManager start chkconfig NetworkManager on Issue#4: Back to the NTFS volume not mounting. Solution#4: I installed ntfs-3g packages and everything mounts fine through nautilus, which is all the user needs. Now everything I could test is working, spice client, Citrix client, google-chrome, vlc, rhythmbox playing mp3s, handbrake (thanks "nux" again), VPN etc. Hope this helps, I was going to update the wiki, but there's no edit button! -- Thanks, David Mansfield Cobite, INC.

CentOS 6 on ppc64 - OpenJDK

Hi folks, we are currently "porting" an application to Linux on Power. As our application is java-based, this would be very easy. We already have packaging for CentOS 6.x (x86_64), which is of course also suitable for RHEL 6.x. Since there is no released CentOS PPC port yet, we are currently working on RHEL6.5 ppc64, however this lacks OpenJDK-7 packages (java-1.7.0-openjdk, compared to i386/x86_64). Building java-1.7.0-openjdk from Source RPM with a tweaked spec file does not work quickly as there are also lots of missing required build packages on ppc64. Does anyone have a proper bootstrap build chain to successfully build the OpenJDK-7 package (java-1.7.0-openjdk). Or does anyone have already build ppc64 packges? Thanks in advance, Kai.
