There are updated packages for php version 5.1.6-1.2 in the c4-testing repository available at dev.centos.org for i386 and x86_64 arches.
Also included is an update to php-pear. This update should also resolve the direct install issue experienced by some where php-pear conflicted with the package in the base repository.
Please test these and report any issues you might have, as these will hopefully be the upgrade path for php5 in centosplus. Any feedback is welcomed, either via replying to this message, or by adding to the php5 tracking bug at http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1580

Thanks, I will give it a short test tomorrow with two database applications that I maintain/develop.
Only semi-related: any news on the upstream Application Stack front? If not, could we start a small fundraiser to buy one of the CentOS developers a license to get access to the sources*?

* I am pretty confident that upstream will release them some day, but it would be nice if a CentOS team member has access to the stack right after new versions are released.

It was decided to basically go ahead and push php updates without waiting for upstream to release, as php has some issues that need to be resolved, and are fixed in the new packages.
If/when upstream finally releases the web app stack, it'll go into a separate repository. The upgrade path from base/updates will be seamless. moving from centosplus to the web app stack repo will likely require manual intervention (removal of some packages with higher version numbers).
As to donations, everyone should feel free to use the 'donate' link on centos.org, as really this is how we can get some things done. I'm not sure how donations of rhn licenses are handled, so I'll let Lance or Johnny answer that part of the question.

I've just confirmed the php + pear upgrade to work on x86_64.

Well ... I can't get anyone to officially comment on this thing :(
Which is why we decided to take this course of action.

Try doing a "yum clean metadata" or "yum clean all" and running it again ... it seems to work out for me right now.

OK ... I have rerun the generate metadata and installed everything from dev.centos.org on an i386 machine ... it seems to be working OK for me (it was before I redid the metadata as well).
Try again to see if you can get the downloads:
the command (if you downloaded the CentOS-Testing repo) would be:
yum --enablerepo=c4-testing upgrade php*
(or replace upgrade with install)
Thanks, Johnny Hughes

Same here. It took us a while to figure out we needed to "pear install db" to get db functionality with PEAR.

quick question, to everyone out there who uses php and xml stuff, should php-xml-5.x provide a php-domxml so that php-domxml-4.x has a direct update path, and packages that require php-domxml would / could meet their requires: from the php-5 tree ( php-xml-5.x does not, at this time provide a php-domxml )
This would have a direct impact on the horde packages in centos-extras.

Sorry, hit send somehow by mistake...
Has this problem been brought up on RedHat's bugzilla? For the record, php-xml in RHEL5-beta1 does this:
%package xml Summary: A module for PHP applications which use XML Group: Development/Languages Requires: php = %{version}-%{release} Obsoletes: php-domxml, php-dom Provides: php-dom, php-xsl
So it obsoletes it, and there is an upgrade path for php-domxml to php-xml, but rpms that require php-domxml need php-xml to provide php-domxml as well. Do you want to file a bug report?

Good news - php-xml in rhel5 provides php-domxml now - that bug is closed.
Just filed another redhat bug report suggesting a change to the php-pear rpm because: - In RHEL4 php-pear provides Archive_Tar, Console_Getopt, DB, HTTP, Mail, Net_SMTP, Net_Socket, PEAR, XML_Parser and XML_RPC - In RHEL5 php-pear provides Archive_Tar, Console_Getopt, PEAR and XML_RPC
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=218220
Hopefully Redhat likes the suggestion, but it's not a trivial one... Maybe consider it for php-pear in centosplus though.
Thanks,
Greg

If FC5 and FC6 are any indication, they may only change the provides for php-pear, as the pear modules are being split out into separate modules, php-pear-Net-Socket for example.

I think that would be more work for them. It would be much easier to use existing rpms from Fedora Core/Extras 6 and just add some 'requires:' to the php-pear specfile. I'm sure it's not a trivial request to support 6 more rpms in RHEL5 though, so we'll see what they say. If you think about it though, really they have removed those 6 rpms from RHEL if they don't add them.
This also prevents writing a spec file for Horde that works with php4 and php5.
