CentOS Dojo at CERN (October 19th)

For the second year, we will be hosting a Dojo at CERN, on the Friday immediately before the Open Source Summit in Edinburgh - that is, on October 19th. Details of this event, including the call for papers, are available at http://cern.ch/centos Information about how you can help are at https://wiki.centos.org/Events/Dojo/CERN2018 In particular, at this point, we need help spreading the word about the call for papers, or suggestions of individuals that we should solicit talks from. CentOS Dojo at DevConf.us

DevConf.us is a new conference, modeled after DevConf.cz and DevConf.in, which will held in Boston on August 17th - 19th. We will be holding a CentOS Dojo on the Thursday before DevConf - August 16th - also at Boston University. Details about this event are here: https://wiki.centos.org/Events/Dojo/DevConfUS2018 The Call for Papers is currently open. If you expect to be in the area, please consider submitting a talk. Or, if you have a suggestion for someone from the local area who you think would be a good speaker, please let me know. So far we have a couple of speakers who have agreed to present - Matthew Miller, of the Fedora community, and the folks from the Research Computing Systems group at Boston University are trying to find the right person to come talk to us about the projects that they work on. Additionally, we'll have a table/booth at the main DevConf.us event. Ohio LinuxFest sponsorship (October 12, 13)

CentOS and Fedora are working together to sponsor the upcoming Ohio LinuxFest in Columbus, October 12th and 13th. Our logo isn't up on the site yet, but should be in the next day or two. This is just a short drive from home for me, so I'll be carting the tablecloth and pull-up banner and stickers, and some demo hardware, up to Columbus for the weekend. Details of our presence there are (will be) at https://wiki.centos.org/Events/2019/OhioLinux If you are (or will be) in the area around that time, you would be more than welcome to come hang out at our table, and talk to our community. OLF is a free, grassroots event, drawing somewhere around 1000 enthusiasts, mostly from the local area. It tends to have a lot of students, but also people from local industry. Hi, folks, it is my intent to reboot the CentOS newsletter in the coming month - probably starting in June. My goal for collecting items that go in the newsletter is to pull a couple of items each week out of our mailing lists, focusing on what our SIGs are doing, and add them to a running document - https://docs.google.com/document/d/12lLmSNqQbDsO6xbDpsyEKcIVslb1c8RZBaziOxB… - and then pull together then final mailing at the end of each month. I would love to have additional participation in this effort from anyone and everyone who is interested. I need help collecting the news items, and in curating the final draft that we'll send out. 2018/2019 events calendar

TL;DR: What events should we go to? Tell me at https://goo.gl/forms/kLZ2y1H1jRSy4NdC3 Looking at the coming 12 months, I need some feedback as I select events that need to have a CentOS presence of some kind. While I have already committed to some of these events (See below), starting around July we haven't really signed on for much, and I would like to hear from the community what events you feel we should be at, and why. The why is, by far, the more important half of the question. Why, as in, what story do we want to tell there; who are we trying to tell that story to; what would be a positive outcome from being there. First, here are the events that I am already committed to: May 8-10: Red Hat Summit - https://www.redhat.com/en/summit/2018 June 25-28: ISC-HPC (SuperComputing) Frankfurt - https://www.isc-hpc.com/ October 1-3: cPanel, Houston - https://conference.cpanel.com/ November 12-15: SuperComputing 18, Dallas - https://sc18.supercomputing.org/ February 2-3 (assumed): FOSDEM, Brussels - http://fosdem.org The story at Red Hat Summit is that CentOS (and, specifically, our SIGs) is the platform for innovation, and the source of all of Red Hat's products, as well as projects and products that continue to invent the industry. The story at the SuperComputing events is what I have been tweeting "SuperComputing is #PoweredByCentOS" - which is incontrovertibly true. The top 500 supercomputers in the world are overwhelmingly CentOS. We attend cPanel because the web hosting business, and in particular cPanel-backed sites, are overwhelmingly running on CentOS. FOSDEM - because it's FOSDEM. Events where we could have a presence are, of course, legion. We can continue to do the events that we did last year, and the year before, and that would be fine. Or we can try to visit some other industry segment where we'd like to shine brighter. I've made a Google Form at https://goo.gl/forms/kLZ2y1H1jRSy4NdC3 listing the events that I'm currently considering, but also providing space for you to tell me what events I'm not thinking about yet. Looking at https://wiki.centos.org/SpecialInterestGroup/Promo it's not clear if the list there are sig members, or just folks willing to speak at events. I know this SIG is weird because we don't produce code/packages, so this may not be a relevant question. But, who is the SIG team leader, referenced on that page? CentOS Newsletter

Long, long ago, there was a CentOS Newsletter: https://wiki.centos.org/Newsletter/ There's some useful documentation about how to contribute to it: https://wiki.centos.org/Newsletter/Contributing And then, after running for a year, it looks like it just stopped. I presume that whoever was heading it up moved on to other things, and nobody filled in the spot. I'd like to revive it over the coming months, and I wondered: * if anyone had some insight as to why it died * if anyone here is interested in helping with this effort A newsletter can be a great way to tell the less-engaged audience what's going on without their having to read every mailing list. It's a great way to get our message out to the larger Linux audience. And it's a great way to encourage people working on the SIGs to brag about what they've accomplished Let me know if you want to play along.
