Hi,
is this the right list for discussing this? If there is a better list, or this is better discussed in PM, divert this thread there :)

What hardware does CentOS like to use for its booth?
http://wiki.centos.org/Events/LinuxTag2007 says
# Who brings a demo-system ? # Anything else to demo ? # Demo-system (maybe big screen or projector) (Anyone?)
If you could detail this a bit more, I can ask around for some bits and bolts (I'm living in Berlin). I can't make any promisses, though.

We have a fresh CentOS-Promo list for discussing events :).

Well, it all depends on what we want to show. At FOSDEM we had a system with a big TFT screen to show compiz in action. Now, everybody nowadays is doing this (LinuxWorld Brussels had all Linux booths showing this) so we may have to advance it a little. Maybe showing slideshows at the same time and/or starting applications on some faces of the cube.
I'd like to see if we can take the same TFT screen with me, but it would of course be easier if we don't have to transport it 800km or we find something better.
We have triangular booth, so one or two projectors/beamers would be an advantage as we can show both directions a message. Beware that beamers will not be enough as we have to need a screen to display on as well according to the organisation. So it might not be possible or too expensive.
I'll bring a laptop, ralph will as well and possibly others too. So in the worst case scenario we just display a few laptops to show off CentOS on laptops. (Do make sure that most functionality you want to show works and is tested on your laptop !)
What are we going to demo ? CentOS, as an Enterprise Linux has many practical uses: servers, appliances and desktops. Servers is hard to show off except for management/reporting applications, appliances could be VOIP/VDR setups, desktops would be the compiz setup with interesting GUI applications.
If you can fill in one of these, feel free to do so :) I can give you access to the wiki if not already so.
It would also be nice if we could document the setup of a demo-system so that other people can build on that next event.
Kind regards, -- dag wieers, dag@wieers.com, http://dag.wieers.com/ -- [all I want is a warm bed and a kind word and unlimited power]

IMHO It would be nice if we can have a machine with a VT-X enabled CPU at the booth, and demo Xen with CentOS 4.5 and 5 domUs, as well as some OS that requires HVM. Together with our upstream we seriously have a lead in that area, and it's a hot subject.

Right, let's add that to the wiki as well. In fact, those items should not be specific to LinuxTag at all so I'll reorganise the events-wiki a bit so that we can add that to a more generic sub-page.

Hi folks , I was planning to come for linuxtag and volunteer. unfortunately 'cause of job shift I will not be able to make it.
Following is a suggestion. I use a Centos and Fedora mix environment at work which I have setup. with kickstart and TFTP. It will be nice idea to display such simple powerful Enterprise strenngths.
How one can role out a single enterprise environment with right packages (like packages from Dags repo or any third party RPMs) .
Such a setup can be displayed using Either inside a Vmware or if one has a spare box .
The system can also be used to have a small install fest. I mean get your box and have a running Centos for Desktop use in 15 min flat.
Just my two cents.

Hi Guys,
Just wanted to let you know that we'll be attending Linuxtag as well and we will be sure to visit the CentOS booth! Perhaps we can continue some of the discussions we had on possible donations we have to offer CentOS.
We will be there May 30, not really sure about a time. With 'we' I mean Wouter Spee (Rexmundi on IRC) and myself (WorkMonk on IRC).
Looking forward to having a nice chat!

Hi Axel,
(still rereading mails from last weekend)
Axel Thimm wrote:

As others already said - many people will bring Laptops (hey guys, mine is still running Fedora and will continue to do so, so that's probably not the perfect demo system :) ).
Looking at the booth plan we don't really have much space for a big LCD screen, as we have those three pedestals and the table in the back:
http://www.linuxtag.org/2007/tmp/aufplanung/07%20Linux%20Tag%2012%2035%20CenTOS%20ansi.jpg
Two of those pedestals have no space to the side because of the columns to the left or right ...
So some sort of beamer would be great - and a fitting PC for that. I already asked my employer, but our two portable beamers aren't free for a complete week (or they do not trust me enough with them - I'm not sure).
It would be great if someone could at *least* bring an LCD (19"?) with him - if there is someone coming by car.
Cheers,
Ralph

Yes, you need to apply for it until the 16th (and pay for it, of course).

Unfortunately in German, I couldn't find an Englisch translation, I think there is none :/

There's still the option to apply for it later (the date is "two weeks before the expo begins"), if - and only then - no claim are there/no damage has happened before the expo (like problems with transport).
Insurance is 3 one-tenth of a percent of the value of the equipment. For easily breakable stuff (monitors, terminals, glass), they add 10 one-tenth of a percent (where the hell is that character on my keyboard?) to it. At least EUR 50,- have to be paid (that would correspond to a value of ~ EUR 5.000, if I'm not mistaken).
If something happens, 25% of the value have to be paid by us.
Plus there is a general liability insurance (EUR 82,-/week) and an accident insurance (EUR 10,- per person per week) available.
Cheers,
Ralph

If you'd like me to organize a beamer and/or a PC it would be from my former physics department at the university, and that would require having the hardware insured.
As said I can't commit to it, because I'm not deciding it. I had already asked the staff and they wanted to know first what is needed and whether it is insured.

I think you may be - 3 one-tenth implies to me 0.3 % which for 5000 would be 150
Maybe we need say 2000 euros of cover for 60 euros - which CentOS project can repay by paypal if someone lays it out.
Or do we need more ??

EUR 65,- for insuring EUR 5,000,-.

The insurance includes personal stuff of the exhibitors (Notebooks, PDAs, Smartphones, whatever). So I think EUR 2,000 isn't enough. But see above.

Does everyone have a liability insurance of those attending there? Those might be paid privately, I think.
I'd be able to lay out the money beforehand and if nobody disagrees will collect liability insurance (82/6 persons) and accident insurance (10*6 persons) personally. It would be great if CentOS would repay the theft insurance.
Opinions?

Centos has no issue paying the others as well if they are needed.
But it is also best to not leaver stuff valuable unattended , to avoid harming 3rd parties and to be careful in case of accidents :)

If we have no other choice - as said, I am not able to bring stuff like that with me (Monitor is too big as I'm going by train, beamers are in use), but that would have to be insured as well.
