CentOS port to the ARM architecture?

Hi! I'm interested in doing a CentOS port to the ARM architecture. Due to ARM switching to a new ABI (EABI) that isn't 100% supported until glibc 2.4/2.5-ish, kernel 2.6.16-ish and gcc 4.1, porting CentOS 4 isn't really an option if you want to run that new ABI. But since RHEL5 will have all the necessary versions of the above packages, I'd be very interested in running a version of RHEL5 on my ARM boxes, since I run CentOS (4.4 at the moment) on all my x86 machines as well. So far I have about 80% of Fedora Core 6 built for ARM, and with some minor gcc/glibc patching, it's been working pretty well for me so far. I suspect that the same patches applied to RHEL5 will produce a working version of RHEL5 for ARM without much effort. I wonder what steps are necessary and what the criteria to become an "official" CentOS arch port, apart from (obviously!) producing a set of RPMS. cheers, Lennert

X11R6 include path

Hello there, In our company we use CentOS on our build machines which mostly build software related to X11. For some reasons the path /usr/X11R6/include is not known during building unless i specify -I/usr/X11R6/include path to g++ options. I wonder if there isn't any environmen variable that I could set so that I don't have to specify it in each makefile. I don't have this problem using different distros (e.g. ArchLinux, Fedora) so I suppose that this path is compiled into g++ directly. If there isn't such a variable that I could set, then I wonder if the best I can do is to create different makefile that set's this variable and which will be included in all the other makefiles. Also some compilers complain with a message like this: Line 1254 : cc1plus: warning: include location "/usr/X11R6/include" is unsafe for cross-compilation when this path is specified with the '-I' option. time stray on the latest centos release: 2.6.9-11.EL

Hi, The clock on my laptop seems to be straying dramatically from the real time even if I turn off ntpd. Could it be the clock applet itself? After I run rdate with ntpd off, it starts to stray right away. This started in the last two weeks after doing many updates. Has anyone else seen this, or even fixed it? Thanks in advance, Blair.

CentOS 4 and Intel D965 motherboards

Does anyone on the list have a magic ball that could tell when support for the D965-based motherboards will come to CentOS 4 (i386)? I've got a DG965RYCK that fails a CentOS 4.4 install early on (problems scanning the PCI bus). Fedora Core 6 installs just fine. If anyone has any information, or magic boot parameters to try, please let me know. ("Works for me" is OK too). Thanks much. Dave Thompson UW-Madison

Updated PHP packages are now in the c4-testing repository

There are updated packages for php version 5.1.6-1.2 in the c4-testing repository available at dev.centos.org for i386 and x86_64 arches. Also included is an update to php-pear. This update should also resolve the direct install issue experienced by some where php-pear conflicted with the package in the base repository. Please test these and report any issues you might have, as these will hopefully be the upgrade path for php5 in centosplus. Metalinks contain mirror and p2p locations along with checksums and other metadata for faster and easier downloads. Downloads can be distributed between mirrors and checksums are automatically verified when it finishes. Mirrors have location and priority information to make the download more efficient. Updated package for squid (CentOS 4.4)

There's an updated package for squid in the development repository at <http://dev.centos.org/>. This fixes the problem with squid only having 1024 file descriptors available. The patch was "forwardported" from the squid package in CentOS 3.8. You get a new configuration variable in squid.conf with which you can control the number of file descriptors available for squid: # TAG: max_filedesc # The maximum number of open file descriptors. # #Default: # max_filedesc 1024 This package works here under a comparatively low load. So please test this package if you need more than 1024 file descriptors and report any issues or success with this package either here or at <http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1603>. php 5 and MSSQL

Is there any interest in adding MSSQL to php 5? It's fairly easy to modify the spec to produce this (I've done so in a previos version already), and I'll volunteer to make the changes if there's consensus it's worth doing. FreeTDS is required to build mssql support, and it's currently provided through rpmforge. I assume everyone would prefer to have the required library exist within centosplus so php-mssql could be installed without requiring a library from an external repo? So, what are your thoughts on this? I know I keep getting asked for it, so I assume there's at least some demand. -- - Kevan Benson - A-1 Networks
