Question re RHEL 5.3

I've heard now from more than one source about problems with CentOS (and RH) at least up through 5.2 w.r.t. SATA drive handling, and I've even reported on this myself in this list before. My question is, do we have any idea if 5.3 has any improvements in this area? One of my cohorts here, who happens to be a Fedora fan, says that these problems are fixed in F9, but I have grave concerns about putting an enterprise lifeline main application on any Fedora release. If 5.3 solves these issues, I'd much rather go with that. Any ideas? Any places I might look to see for myself? Thanks. mhr

LDAP and expired passwords

CentOS 5.2 with OpenLDAP 2.3.27, nss_ldap_253.13, using TLS, i686 and x86_64. If a user with an expired password (shadowLastChange + shadowMax < current day) logs in to a system where ldap.conf points first to a consumer-only LDAP server, the password change operation (exop) proceeds and fails with: LDAP password information update failed: Referral If I comment out "ssl start_tls", the referral to the master is followed and the password change operation succeeds. I've found references to problems with earlier releases of pam_ldap when referrals were not properly followed when using TLS, and these are supposed to be fixed; apparently not in my case. Can anyone hit me with the clue stick? The relationship between udev and MAKEDEV

Hi People, Recently an issue where I was trying to changed the group and permission associated with the device /dev/net/tun. As I knew devices were controlled by udev I went looking at its configuration and found this rule 50-udev.rules:KERNEL=="tun", NAME="net/%k". Some research on the web suggested that modifying the default rules was a bad idea and that you should in fact override them with your own custom rules. So I tried setting up a custom rule, this failed. I then tried modifying the default rule this also failed. A helpful response from here pointed me to MAKEDEV and I was able to change /etc/makedev.d/01linux-2.6.x to do what I wanted. But this has raised a couple of questions for me. 1. If udev doesn't directly control the creation of this device why is there a udev rule for it? 2. Is modifying /etc/makedev.d/01linux-2.6.x likely to cause me issues in future ? My investigation to date has led to me to believe that devices listed in /etc/udev/makedev.d/ are the devices that you always want to be present on a system rather than relying on something about your systems Hardware configuration to lead to a device being created. Is this correct ? Thank you for any thoughts / information you can share relating to this.

Picasa vs. native photo management apps

Hi, I'm running a small business (http://www.microlinux.fr) offering various services around GNU/Linux, among which migrating folks from Windows to Linux. On server and desktops, I'm using CentOS exclusively. I know, Fedora would be more suitable, but I like the solidity of CentOS, and I can always build the odd missing bits myself from Fedora SRPMS. My heavily customized CentOS-based desktop is very solid and production-proof (in use in all the public libraries around here). One request that I got more often lately is Google Picasa. I vaguely remember having downloaded and installed it once. As far as I know, it's a closed-source Windows app that comes with a WINE emulation layer. Not exactly the open source spirit. As far as I'm concerned, I manage all my photos with some very basic tools: GThumb, Nautilus, GIMP, and that's it. Are there some tasks one performs with Picasa that one can't perform with these native programs? Or is there some other well-made photo management software that you can recommend as a replacement for Picasa? Cheers, Niki Kovacs

Dear All, its a offtopic question but really apprecite if someone would advise n help i have been running a mil server with sendmail and have sbl-xbl.spamhaus.org as my dnsbl. i had other servers which are alredy out now that is relays.ordb.org and dsbl.org have already been out of my sendmail config. any one knows of ny other servers i could add in my sendmail config apprecite ur help thanks regards Fabian -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

OT: SA/Apache "Best Practice"?

Alle, Here is our situation: Our customer leases their machines from us and contract us to to manage them (as far as all systems administration issues). The customer does not have root access to any machine (by their own choice, as they want us to be responsible if something goes awry). In the case of their web servers, we handle all configuration, they manage the content. We make changes to the configuration as necessary to support their content. There is one machine (RHEL5.2) that they are developing on that will become a production box. They have sudo access to manage mysql functions as well as the apache server. They have asked, that we change the default directory permission/ownership of /var/www/html,cgi-bin, instead of using the Documentroot and ScriptAlias parameters in the apache configuration. drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jan 11 2008 /var/www/cgi-bin drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4096 Jan 11 2008 /var/www/html to drwxrwxr-x 2 root user 4096 Jan 11 2008 /var/www/cgi-bin drwxrwxr-x 2 root user 4096 Jan 11 2008 /var/www/html We have explained that it is preferable *not* to modify the default filesystem configuration of the underlying OS and have recommended that they customize the app by specifying a location of their choice in httpd.conf. They argue that they "just want to use the system default location". There is no *technical* reason for this, according to them. The location does not affect the app. None of the other web servers we manage for them use the RHEL apache default, they all have customized locations for content and scripts. My question is: What argument, if any, would you use to try and convince the customer that this is a bad idea/bad practice? Best Regards, Camron -- Camron W. You may find inserting the RBL in sendmail as a successful choice. In case you do not, What I use is a combination of scoring within SpamAssassin on the public RBLs and maintaining my own RBL on my local mail servers (See http://www.corpit.ru/mjt/rbldnsd.html). I got too many false positives off publicly available RBLs, but adding up the number of RBLs a sender 'hits' made my SpamAssassin scoring method VERY ACCURATE! Good luck and keep fighting!

Folks, I fully understand the emotional need to respond to one who throws around terms like "Communist", "Tyrannical", etc. even if ostensibly framed as a rhetorical question. Certain terms and phrases are by nature pejorative and I;m sure the OP knew this when he entered his post. My feeling was the OP is either an ignorant, unappreciative, self-centered, and emotionally immature person that expects all projects and activities to meet his desires, wants and criteria, _or_ he is trolling. In either case, any response you provide will be obviously wasted as the OP's POV will likely not be affected. Therefore, you waste your time responding. nfs mounted /home and selinux

I'm trying to set the context on an nfs mounted /home. I believe exactly like in Redhat's Deployment Guide at http://www.redhat.com/docs/en-US/Red_Hat_Enterprise_Linux/5.2/html/Deployme… On my system running CentOS 5.2: $ ls -alZ /home drwxr-xr-x root root system_u:object_r:home_root_t . drwxr-xr-x root root system_u:object_r:root_t .. $ mount -t nfs -o context=user_u:object_r:user_home_dir_t \ server001a:/vol/vol01/home /home $ ls -alZ /home drwxrwxr-x root root system_u:object_r:nfs_t . drwxr-xr-x root root system_u:object_r:root_t .. drwx------ fred users system_u:object_r:nfs_t fred drwx------ mike users system_u:object_r:nfs_t mike drwx------ alice users system_u:object_r:nfs_t alice $ mount -l server001a:/vol01/home on /home type nfs (rw,context="user_u:object_r:user_home_dir_t:s0",addr=10.1.1.11) Shouldn't the users be set to user_u:object_r:user_home_dir_t? I feel like I am missing something simple... I don't see any avc or related syslog messages and the nfs server is an older netapp if that matters. thanks, marc
