Lingering dhclient issue

I recently reconfigured some CentOS 4.3 systems that were using DHCP to use static IP addresses. At the same time, the systems were moved to a new VLAN. Here is the approximate sequence of events that took place: 1. ifdown eth0 2. edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 with static IP address 3. wait for network folks to reconfigure switch 4. ifup eth0 I may have reversed steps 1 and 2 on some of the systems. The problem was that the dhclient process didn't go away, and kept renewing the old lease. Our DHCP server is configured to contact the DNS server and update the entry for each host it serves. So the DNS entries for these systems were pointing to the old address in the old VLAN. The eth0 interface itself just kept the static IP address for which it was configured. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. My question is, what could I have done to avoid this (other than killing the dhclient process)? Is there a better way to reconfigure an interface to use a static address? I am not interested in solutions that involve using a GUI (i.e., only command line solutions). Thanks, Alfred

In CentOS 4.1/2, what package contains this library: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3? I installed a couple of the compat- packages, but this library is still missing.

Don't forget to use torrents for your downloads!

For those who may forget, usin torrents to download and share the new images will get you faster downloads (if enough folks participate) if you have a "fat" pipe and alleviate the load on the CentOS servers. I have a "chubby" pipe (~ 1.2MB/sec) and got the stuff really quickly earlier today. If your torrent has distributed hash table capability, I suggest that you also use that feature. Hello z00dax, any update about this issue? As i can see, in centos 5.3 the version of php still 5.1.6. Did you have any ETA to php 5.2.0 be moved to release repo? Certificate system

Hi all, Can anybody inform me wether the "RedHat Certificate System" or actually a CentOS equivalent is available for CentOS. Just skimmed on a download site through the RPM's for 5.3 and I couldn't find it. According to their pressrelease, it the code should be gpl, allthough I can't find any rpm for RH, FC or Centos. It seems that this is one of the few CA-packages for large scale deployment of certificates. Only alternative AFAIK is OpenCA, which seems to be hardly maintained... Dell Poweredge R300

Hi all, Just found out that the Poweredge R300 cant even load the CentOS 5.2 64bit installer. Had to revert to Ubuntu. Seems its a driver problem. Weird performance problem

Hi, I'm running a CentOS 4. server and I sometimes face a weird problem. It is a weird performance problem, and here is how I discovered it. This server runs OpenVZ virtual machines, and one of them is an asterisk server for my personal use. The first symptom of the problem is that the voice quality became flaky. So I logged on the server to see what could be eating cpu cycles, when I ran top, it took almost one minute before top actually showed. Another hint is that when I run dstat (a monitoring utility that is a mix of iostat and vmstat and other stats), I often get a "missed xx ticks", where xx is a number. The only solution I've found up to now is to reboot... But hey, this isn't a Windows 98 machine :)! I tried restarting the VZ system, which restarts all the VMs, but it didn't solve the problem. I can't tell if the problem occurs on a stock centos kernel, because the server is running production (but non-critical) virtual machines, so it is always running the openVZ kernel.
