Lingering dhclient issue

I recently reconfigured some CentOS 4.3 systems that were using DHCP to use static IP addresses. At the same time, the systems were moved to a new VLAN. Here is the approximate sequence of events that took place: 1. ifdown eth0 2. edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 with static IP address 3. wait for network folks to reconfigure switch 4. ifup eth0 I may have reversed steps 1 and 2 on some of the systems. The problem was that the dhclient process didn't go away, and kept renewing the old lease. Our DHCP server is configured to contact the DNS server and update the entry for each host it serves. So the DNS entries for these systems were pointing to the old address in the old VLAN. The eth0 interface itself just kept the static IP address for which it was configured. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. My question is, what could I have done to avoid this (other than killing the dhclient process)? Is there a better way to reconfigure an interface to use a static address? I am not interested in solutions that involve using a GUI (i.e., only command line solutions). Thanks, Alfred

In CentOS 4.1/2, what package contains this library: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3? I installed a couple of the compat- packages, but this library is still missing.

Upgrade mail server to new machine

I have an old RHEL3 box that I am upgrading to CentOS5. I picked up a new Dell Poweredge R200 to use for that. Is there an easy way to copy all the user accounts and existing mail from the old server to the new one? Thanks. -- -=/>Thom

Reformatting a USB drive

preferred software RAID 10?

Hi all I'm looking at setting up software RAID 10, using CentOS 5.1 x64 - what is the best way todo this? I'm reading some sources on the internet, and get a lot of different "suggestions" 1 suggestion says to boot up with a Live CD like Knoppix or SystemRescueCD, setup the RAID 10 partitions, and then install Linux from there. 2. Another is to setup a small RAID 1 on the first 2 HDD's, install Linux, bootup, and then setup the rest as RAID 10 The others didn't really make sense to me, so how do I actually do this? And then, how do I setup the partitioning? Do I setup /boot on a separate RAID "partition"? OT: Making BT/Yahoo account accessible to plain router

My daughter has a BT account, with a BT supplied single-port router. I'd like to replace it with a standard router, but the settings appear to be totally hidden. If anyone reading uses BT, could you please tell me where to find the info? Maybe off-list, to save bandwidth for others/ Thanks Anne

settings up cheap a NAS / SAN server, is it possible?

Hi all I want to look at setting up a simple / cheap SAN / NAS server using normal PIV motherboard, 2GB (or even more) RAM, Core 2 Duo CPU (probably a Intel 6700 / 6750 / 6800) & some SATA HDD's (4 or 6x 320GB - 750GB). My budget is limited, so I can't afford a pre-built NAS device. Can this be done with CentOS? I've been looking FreeNAS (which is built on FreeBSD), and it look like a great project, but since the hardware support in FreeBSD is limit, I'd rather use Linux for it. Has anyone done this? Could not start X window

Hi, I've just installed CentOS version 5 on a laptop Acer ASPIRE 5920. But could not start X window. It got following error message: Using confi file" "/etc/X11/xorg.conf" (EE) VESA(0): No valid modes (EE) Screens(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fetal server error: no screens found XIO: fetal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" Please also find attached xorg.conf. Thank you. Kind Regards, Jim
