Lingering dhclient issue

I recently reconfigured some CentOS 4.3 systems that were using DHCP to use static IP addresses. At the same time, the systems were moved to a new VLAN. Here is the approximate sequence of events that took place: 1. ifdown eth0 2. edit /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 with static IP address 3. wait for network folks to reconfigure switch 4. ifup eth0 I may have reversed steps 1 and 2 on some of the systems. The problem was that the dhclient process didn't go away, and kept renewing the old lease. Our DHCP server is configured to contact the DNS server and update the entry for each host it serves. So the DNS entries for these systems were pointing to the old address in the old VLAN. The eth0 interface itself just kept the static IP address for which it was configured. It took me a while to figure out what was going on. My question is, what could I have done to avoid this (other than killing the dhclient process)? Is there a better way to reconfigure an interface to use a static address? I am not interested in solutions that involve using a GUI (i.e., only command line solutions). Thanks, Alfred

In CentOS 4.1/2, what package contains this library: libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3? I installed a couple of the compat- packages, but this library is still missing.

Don't forget to use torrents for your downloads!

For those who may forget, usin torrents to download and share the new images will get you faster downloads (if enough folks participate) if you have a "fat" pipe and alleviate the load on the CentOS servers. I have a "chubby" pipe (~ 1.2MB/sec) and got the stuff really quickly earlier today. If your torrent has distributed hash table capability, I suggest that you also use that feature. Hello z00dax, any update about this issue? As i can see, in centos 5.3 the version of php still 5.1.6. Did you have any ETA to php 5.2.0 be moved to release repo? Certificate system

Hi all, Can anybody inform me wether the "RedHat Certificate System" or actually a CentOS equivalent is available for CentOS. Just skimmed on a download site through the RPM's for 5.3 and I couldn't find it. According to their pressrelease, it the code should be gpl, allthough I can't find any rpm for RH, FC or Centos. It seems that this is one of the few CA-packages for large scale deployment of certificates. Only alternative AFAIK is OpenCA, which seems to be hardly maintained... Problem with Logitech wireless keyboard EX110

I got a Logitech EX110 wireless keyboard and mouse set about a year or so ago, maybe more. The number pad on the keyboard stopped working after a while, so I complained to Logitech, and they sent me a new keyboard (actually, the whole set). I've had the problem on and off again a couple of times since then, but it usually only lasts a few days before all is well again. However, my son also has the same set (well, same model, different pieces of hardware) on his Windows XP machine, and he has _never_ had this problem. Tonight, he suggested that it might be a Linux problem, so I took our spare keyboard of this same type and switched them on my machine. Surprise: the new keyboard has exactly the same problem - no response from the number pad. Actually, that's not entirely accurate. The num lock and the Enter key both work, but the 5 key produces some control combination I don't recognize (seems to behave something like ^V of a previously ^X'd clipboard copy, unrelated to the current input), and the + key which seems to produce something like ^V^V, or "highlight the current terminal line" or something, but none of the other keys work at all. In any case, it looks like this is a problem with the keyboard driver, not the keyboard hardware. If I replace the wireless set with a wired keyboard and mouse, without rebooting, the mouse works, but the keyboard does not. (Apparently, after I tried the following, it turned out to be a bad keyboard....) If I replace the keyboard and reboot, oh, foo, bad keyboard. But! If I reboot with a good keyboard, it works, and then I can switch back to the wireless set and everything works, _including_ the number pad: 0.123456789/*-+ Is there a way to refresh the keyboard driver without rebooting? Anyway, thoughts, suggestions, etc. welcome. mhr

If someone can test it by actually *using* it, that will be great. I did not touch the code, so it should work. Nevertheless... * Some side note In the current kmod-xfs, modules are partially strip'ed. This has a dramatic effect on the size of the modules (hence the packages themselves). For example, the obsoleted rpm's were this big: 3413556 May 25 16:50 kmod-xfs-0.4-2.el4.i686.rpm 3500186 May 25 16:50 kmod-xfs-0.4-2.el4.x86_64.rpm The current packages are: 299042 May 26 13:23 kmod-xfs-0.4-2.el4.i686.rpm 308712 May 26 13:23 kmod-xfs-0.4-2.el4.x86_64.rpm All in-kernel modules are strip'ed during compilation. Random server reboot after update to CentOS 5.3

Dear ML We upgraded a Dell Poweredge PE 1950 Server the 8th of May. Since then the server rebooted 3 times without external cause (it is located in a server farm with redundant power supply etc.). Looking at the servers monitoring infrastructure with Dell's own OpenManage tools, I get strange errors: [root@servernew ~]# omreport system esmlog (....) Severity : Critical Date and Time : Mon May 11 17:46:59 2009 Description : System Software event: run-time critical stop was asserted Severity : Critical Date and Time : Fri May 15 21:07:57 2009 Description : System Software event: run-time critical stop was asserted Severity : Critical Date and Time : Wed May 20 21:00:53 2009 Description : System Software event: run-time critical stop was asserted (...) This class of errors never happened before in over a year that the server is running. There is no mention of any anomaly, except the boot messages itself, in /var/log/messages. The server runs the 64 bit flavor of CentOS hosting some XEN virtual machines and some PostgreSQL and MySQL databases. It run without any issues with CentOS 5.1 and 5.2. I interpreted these issues as some kernel/software related problem, but do not know how to make a more accurate diagnosis of the problem. Can anybody give me some hint?
